Acupuncture:

The acupuncture portion of MS treatment encompasses several modalities including, scalp, auricular (ear) and body points. Thin needles are placed in specific locations according to a patient's pattern of symptoms and TCM diagnosis. Stimulation by either hand or a TENS machine may be used to enhance therapeutic effect.

Chinese herbs:

Many MS patients have shown great benefit over the years from using herbal formulas. Herbs are selected according to a patient's pattern of symptoms and placed together in a formula to both enhance therapeutic effect while reducing potential side effects. Herbs in formula have been used safely with many medications. The doctors and staff are also very knowledgeable about potential interactions or contraindications. Care is always taken to avoid potential herb drug interactions as well as personal allergies and possible dietary restrictions. Patients also always have the option of only electing to receive the acupuncture portion of the treatment.

Tui na massage:

Tui na has been used for years by martial artists to treat injury and dates back thousands of years to the Shang Dynasty where it was used to treat infants and elderly who were ill. It incorporates massage and manipulation techniques like rolling, kneading and grasping the muscle tissue to promote healing, pain relief and enhance the overall therapeutic effect of the acupuncture treatment. Traction, range of motion as well as acupressure and myofascial release are often achieved through the manipulation techniques. Modern research has shown it can be helpful to MS patients.

Fire cupping:

Fire cupping has been used since ancient times to treat a number of different ailments. Records of the practice date back to one of the oldest medical text known (Ebers Papyrus). It is used commonly in conjunction with Tui na in Chinese Medicine. Glass cups are suctioned to the body when the air on the inside is heated by a lit alcohol swab placed inside the cup for a few seconds. The procedure is painless and often times produces a feeling of relaxation and pain relief. Many MS patients report benefit from it.

Dietary Therapy:

Chinese Medicine believes that disease often results from various things in a person's environment/life. These things can include something as intangible as emotion to something as routine as diet. Foods are viewed with similar properties to herbs and capable of having an adverse or even helpful effect on health. This connection is being recognized more in allopathic medicine as we see more how nutrition as well as anti-nutrients affect the body. Part of your treatment may involve dietary suggestions according to TCM theory.

Tai Chi/ Qi Gong:

Tai Chi has garnered a lot of attention in more recent times for its health and relaxation benefits. The style is taught both from a wellness as well as martial application perspective. AAAOM offers classes in this as well as the relaxing practice of Qi Gong.  A reduced fee of $10.00 per class is offered to all MS patients. Talk to your intern about class schedules and registration.
